ROUNDTABLE – Excursion to Biobank Graz

BBMRI-ERIC

Biobank Graz is directly located at the University Hospital Graz (LKH Univ. Klinikum Graz) and it is one of the largest in Europe. Biobanks are collections of biological samples and their associated data, organized in a structured, readily analysable format. The students had the opportunity to see the different categories FFPE, fresh frozen tissues in N2 and body fluids as well as the collection that is 30 years old at least. After a game about recognizing anatomical parts, there was a guided tour through the whole complex watching the different types of conservation and storages.

Students´ Project Ideas Presentations

At the end of the day, the students made their presentations of their intentions. Mila showed her interpretations about the egyptian canopic jars; Barbara is interesting about the question of How much does a Human Life value? and other topics about life insurance; Chiara was questioning the value and the function of an object (here an organ) once it is frozen or/and in a scientific laboratory; Paula would like to make a performance embraced with seeds and the information they store; Maximilian focuses on the relationships and the functioning of a Biobank whereas Xristos questions if he wants to give this kind of information to biobanks. Inspired by Rimbaud, Istem is thinking about a performance with the reflexions about our body and its decomposition; Anna researches about Who owns our body? and finally, Eirini is focused on the Habsburg Genealogy based on physionomy heritage.
