Between the Sounds
Presentation by Katarina Zdjelar
Concerned around ideas of foreigners, estrangement and normalization, Katarina Zdjelar explores processes of self-realization
with their paradoxes, promises and failures. She is particularly concerned with the inhabitation of regulated systems (knowledge,
language, ideology) by non-authoritarian voices, who challenge the system in which they appear in, in terms of ethics, value,
and currency. She articulates these ideas primarily in the medium of moving image and sound, two elements that she uses equally
in her video work.
Many works of Zdjelar concern drawing the limit, vulnerability or failure, as well as potentialities and the challenges in performing the social or aesthetic conventions or demands imposed by regulated systems of power. Music and musicality often touch and enfold these ideas in her work. In her work music serves as a gate, as a knot between the individual and social, or as David Marcus nicely notes “as a point of access to the social sphere, a means of measuring, or sounding, complex dimensions of subjectivity, cultural difference and shared affective response”.
During her presentation “Between The Sounds” she will present a number of her video works and engage in conversation about them.
In the context of exploring questions related to the future of work and what ‘a good life’ could mean through our 'Artscience
practises’ seminar this year. What could be an ecological way of working together, also with fish, glaciers, objects, models,
or stories? How are we shaping cross-species solidarities and how are they forming us? Through lectures, workshops and excursions
we want to investigate different types of relationships between entities and and experiment with assembling strategies through
the winter and summer semesters.

Katarina Zdjelar, born 1979 in Belgrade, SFRY. Lives and works as an artist and art educator in Rotterdam. She studied at
Piet Zwart Institute and University of Art in Belgrade, as well as at Rijksakademie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. She
has presented in institutional exhibitions and film festivals internationally and has presented Serbia at the 53rd Venice
Biennale.
