Intertwined Viennese Lines

Interactive installation

The installation shows an adapted representation of the subway and passenger paths of the Viennese subway system. It should empower the visitor to play with the underlying data, which had been collected and used to create this work.
Artistic Research gets more and more important in every field of specialization. Not just in terms of »humanizing« otherwise cold technology but also to open our minds for new ideas and approaches, which can lead to far more than just simplicity. This installation wants to show the principles of Artistic Research: To observe and work with data in an unbiased, artistic way. The setting allows the clean »saving« of a constellation created by the user, via photography or documentation, kind of like scientists isolate key features to carry out their theories afterwards.
The visible horizontal ring should preserve the original orientation of the ground level. This particular framework for the data representation should also be seen as a statement to Bruno Latour’s idea of a black box – The underlying data gets visible by opening the black box around it. But imagine riding the subway - virtually being inside the black box, taking the system for granted - you will see that black boxes often can and should be opened from within.
