'The gravel, the stone and the marble were spread in strict array in unmysterious shapes. At first sight, it seemed impossible to lose your way. At first sight...Along these stone paths and amidst these statues, where you were already losing your way for ever in the still night, alone with me.'
Alain resnais, Last Year in Marienbad, 1961

Myth, religion, philosophy and science are all rooted in cosmogony, the attempts to explain the meaning of existence within the natural world and the creation of cosmos out of chaos. Since the modern science has become the most powerful cosmology of the last decades, urbanisation and industrialization have been overdeveloped in the most of countries. It’s difficult to create a traditional garden within its own old cosmology, while our approach of nature is blinded and changed by the pursuit of globalised capitalism. The garden or landscape design, reflects the cosmology of the culture which projects the relationship between people and place. Through the garden, humans reshape nature with art and technology by their own cultural context. But the garden, the same as its original landscape prototype, is difficult to preserve and reconstruct in the same way. It is itself an organic creature with the temporary sentiment, memory, cultural symbol and living environment. Through Chin Tsao’s imagination and investigation, she attempts to recreate an image of a fictional Chinese garden, in which she reflects her own cultural experience by her personal perspective. The different sights of the garden refer to the selected historical and literary contexts from the 17th to 20th century, during which the world has been changing due to the scientific revolution and colonialism of Europe. Strolling through this garden, we see the cultural memory becomes its own metaphorical landscape of the gradually varnished cosmology.
