COMMUNICATION ABILITIES AND LEARN FROM
NON HUMAN ENTITIES

I can become a mountain is an installation created and inhabited in the studio of the artist PaulaFlores. The measurements of the work are a result of the empty space that could be provided for theproduction of the installation while maintaining enough minimum space for the artist to be able towork in the studio in other projects simultaneously. This being a reflection of the state of mind of theartist. Due to the COVID quarantine and the University studios being closed in the first lockdownFlores decided to get a studio outside the University. Other than a space to work it was also a spaceof her own since she was sharing her body with her baby that was growing inside of her and sharingthe one bedroom flat with her partner. Her daughter was born in late September and the space inthe flat and in her mind seemed to be getting smaller with the arrival of the new human.

Flores was in the need to have a space for herself that would allow her to get into the thoughts thatshe had put in the thesis. Slowly the space came to be by adding the elements and playing aroundwith them. The space gave her the freedom to travel in her mind how she wanted. She decided toinhabit it for different time frames and with different actions taking place. This was to become atemporary dwelling that invoked memories of her childhood imagination that sprouted from thestories told to her by some of her family members. A space that allowed Flores to have the freedomto navigate in time to her past, to be in the present and to think how she can transgress the barriersof the colonial west in what it means to be a human. The thought about transgressing the concept ofthe human with Amaranth as a guide in order to open possibilities for interspecies communicationwas the main and crucial thought to be explored in this space. But the space didn’t limit itself to thatand it didn’t limit the visitors and temporary dwellers to one act. It allowed them to navigate thetimes of childhood where there were no limits to imagining our surroundings and projecting thoseimaginary creations into a sporadic landscape of play time that had the potential to change theeveryday life reality. A nice relief from the harsh realities
we are facing now.
