Malta Valletta 2018 - European Researchers´ Night Festival: Science In The City

Research travel

Students of the Art & Science´s Master Programme will take part in the festival "Science in the City" in September 2018 and travelled to Malta in April for research and exhibition arrangements.

In the frame of the project “Science in the City”


The University of Applied Art in Vienna, in collaboration with the University of Malta and the Valletta 2018 Foundation will take part in this year's edition of the "Science in the City" festival in the Maltese capital of Valletta.

Under the guidance of Univ.-Prof. Virgil Widrich, the delegation comprised of students Daniela Brill and Guadalupe Aldrete, alumni Michael Bachhofer and project manager Nemanja Popadic visited Malta in the period from 13.04.2018. - 17.04.2018.

The aim of the official visit was meeting with representatives of the University of Malta and the Valletta 2018 Foundation, getting familiar with the city and exhibition venues and getting in touch with local scientists and researchers, with whom the students will collaborate.

The Viennese delegation was warmly welcomed and numerous organized meetings and activities took place. The students had an opportunity to choose an appropriate exhibition venues for their art-pieces and to establish connections with Maltese scientists. Daniela and Guadalupe will be collaborating with archaeologist Dr. Ing. John Betts and molecular chemist Dr. David Magri on their project “ReFraming Carbon”. Michael, together with his working partner Stefan Resch, will join forces with neuroscientist Dr. Nowell Zammit and game AI researcher Prof. Dr. Georgios Yannakakis for their project “Pushing the Mouse”.

During the visit to University of Malta, the students were granted a working space to work on their art-pieces during the month of September. They met with Maltese students participating in the project, with whom they exchanged ideas and experiences.

The visibility of the project’s development and implementation will be enhanced with regular press releases, interviews with the participants and media coverage. The “Science in the City” festival is scheduled to take place on 28th of September 2018.
