Visualization in Geology

VISUALIZATION IN GEOLOGY

Geology investigates the spatial distribution, chemical composition and age of rocks on the Earth. Within the past 100 years, this science changed from a descriptive, conceptual research to a more quantitative approach, analyzing the processes which lead to the generation of mountain belts, oceans, and the earth´s interior structure. On the one hand, traditional methods, e.g. compilation of geological maps or examination of rock forming minerals, are still a fundamental part and basis of every geological study. On the other hand, contemporary geology employs a broad range of scientific methods from mathematics, physics and chemistry. This presentation aims to provide an overview of such interdisciplinary research, comprising geological field work, computer simulations, chemical analysis on the micro-scale, as well as 3D computed tomography visualization of rock samples.

Ulrike Exner was born in Vienna in 1977. In her master studies in Earth sciences at the University of Vienna she investigated the structural features and age of high-pressure rock in northern Italy. In 2005 she received a PhD at the ETH Zurich, where she performed analogue models of geological structures. In her post-doc projects at the University of Vienna projects she created numerical simulations of faults and analyzed microstructures of near-surface faults.
