Liminal Metamorphosis: Rite of being in the zone.

2016, performance, installation

In his seminal work Rites de passage Van Gennep examined tribal societies’ rituals in which person’s social or sexual status changes. He introduced a three-phase scheme of such transitions: separation, margin (limen) and aggregation. Further insights by Victor Turner, marked the second – liminal phase - as being of particular relevance in the studies of both, tribal societies and post-industrial societies. labeled as anti-structure the liminal phenomena poses itself as a capsule of possibilities, which can influence the normative structures and initiate revolution.

Through the medium of performance and installation art, the presented work aims to further explore liminal phenomena as place of being “betwixt and between”, as borderline between two different structures, with a particular attention to movement, threshold and what Csikszentmihaly marked as “flow” or “being in the zone”.
