Curriculum
Each semester, the central artistic subject, ‘Interdisciplinary Project Work Art & Science’, is of significant importance. It serves as an interface of the individual orientations within the study programme. It provides space for developing artistic realisations and critical reflections. Project work presentations take place during the weekly ‘Roundtable’, which covers ‘Interdisciplinary Project Work Art & Science I & II’, ‘Groundwork of Master Thesis’ and the master project feedback presentations. Teachers from the team usually attend the Roundtable to provide feedback and exchange information within the wider student group. This makes transdisciplinary research with reflection on different methods possible and provides professional accompaniment.
Additionally, the Art & Science Department offers a variety of courses to further transdisciplinary research and artistic practice. ‘Collaborative Exhibition Making I & II’ supports the creation of the annual exhibition with the first year students. ‘Art & Science Studio’ offers a space to reflect and discuss everyone’s unique artistic practice in the 2+ year. Martin Reinhart’s courses aim to foster a deeper understanding of current and historical developments in the interconnected fields of art, science and technology. ‘Introduction to the Philosophy of Science’, which is recommended for the first semester, provides all students with a shared foundation on which to discuss the principles of scientific practice. ‘Art & Science Writing’ supports students through the process of conceptualising their written component of the master project.
Students determine the individual focus of the programme, as well as the balance between art and science, by selecting courses from ‘Practice and Theory’ and ‘Free Electives’. Their focus is also determined by the topic of their master project. Current optional courses offered by the Art & Science Department are: ‘Art & Science Forum’ (Noor Stenfert Kroese); ‘Expanded Nature Studies’ (Daniela Brill); ‘Fundamentals of the Performative: Body as Method’ (Peter Kozek); and the second course on 'Making Knowledge' (Naoki Matsuyama).
Alongside the curriculum, an important part of learning is extracurricular through the exchanges and initiatives the students & alumni organise themselves.
