About - Tanja Traxler
Guest Lecturer (only in summer semesters)
Tanja Traxler is a science journalist, author, and university lecturer based in Vienna. She graduated in theoretical quantum physics at the University of Vienna. Since 2019, she is lecturer aa the University of Applied Arts Vienna, previously, she was lecturer at the University of Vienna, Faculty of Physics. Among other institutions, she was guest researcher at the University of California/Santa Cruz (US), Twente University/Enschede (Netherlands), and Churchill College Cambridge (UK). Her research and teaching ranges from philosophy of quantum physics, history of physics, science and society, feminist science studies, to art & science. Since 2022, she is acting as a co-director of the decentralized research agency “Logische Phantasie Lab” (https://lo-ph.agency/), which is affiliated with several renowned academic and cultural institutions such as Princeton University, Slought Gallery Philadelphia, Northeastern University, University of Amsterdam, and the University of Applied Arts Vienna.
Besides her academic work, Tanja is engaged in science journalism and popular science writing. Since 2015, she is staff science editor at the Vienna based newspaper DER STANDARD and received the Austrian Young Talent Award for science journalism in 2018. In 2021, she became head of the science department of DER STANDARD. Her first book “Lise Meitner: Pionierin des Atomzeitalters” (together with David Rennert) was awarded Austria’s science book of the year 2019. In 2020, she published “Die Chemie stimmt” (together with Nuno Maulide), which was translated for an international audience. She received the Austrian Award for Environmental Reporting in 2021.
Tanja will be teaching Crystal Math: Crystallization in Science, Popular Culture, and Society in the summer semester 2023 at the Art & Science Department.
