Can a ship have more than one captain? - Guest Lecture in Architectures of the Everyday at TU Wien

On 18 November 2025, Noor Stenfert Kroese gave a guest lecture in S()fia Braga’s course Architectures of the Everyday within Visual Culture at TU Wien. The course examines how AI intersects with cultural, spatial and social realities, approaching it as a layered sociotechnical system shaped by infrastructures, bias and invisible labour, and exploring new forms of human and non-human collaboration.

Noor’s lecture, “Can a ship have more than one captain?”, introduced students to context-driven interaction across human, non-human and technological agents. It outlined how parallel interaction and biomediated interaction allow multiple agencies to act simultaneously from within their own conditions, and how co-variation in shared environments shapes artistic research in works such as ZOE and MycoGravity.
