About - Peter Kozek
Peter Kozek, born 1972 in Baden near Vienna, works primarily in the fields of performance, installation, video and film, drawing and
public space. He has been a lecturer for performance and space at the University of Applied Arts Vienna since 2006 and
a senior artist at the APL - Angewandte Performance Lab since 2021.
He teaches at the Art and Science department key concepts of embodiment in his course ‘Fundamentals of Performance: The Body as Method’. A collaborative exploration of new perspectives for further performative and interdisciplinary work in the field of Art and Science.
Peter's works usually interact with the surrounding space. Inherent in them are analyses of architectural, social, psychological and historical constellations.
He has been working with Thomas Hörl, among others, since 2003. Numerous exhibitions, performances, films and interventions in public space in Austria and abroad have been created with him and solo, such as Lichthöhe (2022, Museum Moderner Kunst Klagenfurt, with Victor Jaschke), Dämonische Leinwände (2019, steirischer herbst, with Alexander Martinz) or Contributions to the Universal Memorybank / flow.p. (2016, Manifesta11, Zurich).
His studies of cross-media art (1998-2002) with Brigitte Kowanz at the University of Applied Arts Vienna were preceded by classical singing studies with Annet Zaïre (1995-1998) in Vienna.
Since 2006, curatorial and jury activities have included work for Kunstraum NOE, MUMOK Vienna, ZOOM Children's Museum, Art in Public Space Lower Austria and Art in Public Space Tyrol.
Together with Thomas Hörl, Peter Kozek received the Kunsthalle Wien Prize (2002), the H13 Lower Austria Prize for Performance (2009), the BMUKK Outstanding Artist Award (2010), the Lower Austria Prize for Fine Arts (2014), and the City of Vienna Prize for Fine Arts in 2021.
Peter was artist in residence in London/Delfina Art Studios/GB (2002), in Paliano/Colonna Art Foundation/I (2004), in Frankfurt am Main/Musikbunker/D (2013) and in Tokyo/BMKÖS studios abroad/JP in 2014.
Currently (2026), he is involved in the artistic research project Shaken Grounds as a key researcher alongside Nikolaus Gansterer, Mariella Greil and Lucie Strecker.
