Accounting for Taste

It is often assumed, that taste is something very subjective and thus cannot be accounted for. If someone finds something tasty and someone else does not, how can anyone argue against those sentiments? Paradoxically though, taste – be it regarding food, art or interior decoration – is known to give ground to an  infinite number of arguments. Rather than being something that can be noted but not disputed, taste seems to be one of the most argued over subjects that can be found. Maybe Paul Valéry was right then to point out, that matters of taste, seemingly subjective idiosyncrasies, lie at the core of every discussion. And should this not entail that taste is something not so subjective after all, something that can be accounted for.
