Circular Hauntings (Metamaterial)

"Circular Hauntings (Metamaterial)" is part of the serigraphy series: METAMATERIAL that has been exploring the ghostly infinity of representations and circularity of materials since 2016. The materials used are (per)forming their very own structural and molecular formulas, systematic names and visualities, and starting an endless recursive self-reference. In this case, the pigments are minerals from the archive of the prestigious Natural History Museum Vienna. The minerals were processed into powder, which was then used to manufacture compostable paints for serigraphy. The crystal grating of these minerals was visualized and overlaid with sketches of nightmarish figures, fostering a dialogue between the externalized objectivity of the sciences and the internalized emotions of every scientific fact. The deliberate act of partially composting the prints serves as a metaphorical representation of the perpetual circularity of materials, emphasizing the importance of sustainability and the interconnectedness of artistic creation and environmental responsibility.

Claus Schöning Lam Yong is a Berlin-born interdisciplinary artist; this practitioner merges scientific inquiry with artistic expression.
