Folding imaginary landscapes II

"Folding imaginary landscapes II" is the second iteration of a research into embodied knowledge and its relationship to materiality. This installation is inspired by the fictive divide between organic and inorganic, natural and artificial.
Paraffin, an artificial derivative and byproduct of the oil industry, here takes a fragile, organic form hosting remains of mold and bacteria that formed inside the negative mold from which it attains its shape. Wood, on the other hand, takes the function of support - an organic yet steady material.
The positioning of the wax cast pieces alludes to the shape of the first iteration of the sculpture, which was made in clay and resembled the surface of a protein. This is a reminder that materia is in constant flux, a perennial shapeshifter of positive and negative spaces.

Dunia Sahir fluctuates between scientific and artistic research. Their background is in chemistry and biochemistry, with a focus on structural biology. Switching between hanging out with bacteria, crystals and proteins and sculpting in the ceramic studio of the Angewandte, a white/working coat is a constant in their life. A search for and commitment to practices of care shapes their artistic work, which often focuses on movement, touch and perception through performance and sculpture
