Seaside Valley is not only a ski resort in Japan, it is more importantly a map for the video game Dominions 4. The grand strategy
game set in a fictional universe, based on ancient and mythical civilizations, was developed by Illwinter. The small game
developer dedicated years to the refinement of the complex game. The map was meant as a tribute and contribution to the active
modding and mapping community that evolved around the game and of course for the players to enjoy.
Inspired by the ongoing research of members of the department of Art and Science regarding Atlas, the mapmaking is also a means to explore the relation between virtual and actual space. A conventional map is usually a map of a territory that it more or less accurately depicts, or depicts in different ways. A map for a computer game, however, creates the terrain it depicts; the distinction falls apart, the illusion becomes reality.
