2023-04-25 - "100 Misunderstandings about and among Jews“, Jewish Museum Vienna
As part of the course "Experimental Studies II" we had the chance to attend a very interesting guided tour by Caitlin Gura-Redl, one of the curators of the exhibition "100 Misunderstandings about and among Jews". Caitlin gave us an insight into how the exhibition, which was controversially discussed in the media, came about and highlighted the concept behind it with specific exhibits. She spoke very openly about the processes behind making the exhibition and also gave examples of the difficulties in getting exhibits with suitable content for the exhibition. We also discussed some of the controversial artistic positions, such as the video titled "Dancing Auschwitz“ by Australian artist Jane Korman. It shows her, her father (a Holocaust survivor), and their three children dancing to Gloria Gaynor's disco hit "I Will Survive" at sites of Nazi genocide and was received with mixed feelings among the Jewish community. In this context, it was also very interesting to learn which exhibition texts had been supplemented or changed in response to public criticism.
