About - Daniela Brill Estrada
Daniela Brill Estrada is an artist and a researcher from Bogotá, currently living in Vienna. She is a PhD Candidate at the
Art x Science School for Transformation at the Angewandte and the JKU. Daniela began her studies in Fine Arts at the Universidad
Nacional de Colombia in Bogotá. She then moved to Vienna and studied Transdisciplinary Arts (Bachelors) at the University
for Applied Arts Vienna, and finished her Master's in Art & Science at the same University in 2019. Currently, Daniela is
an artist in residence at the SETI Institute with the project Exoplanetary Poetry, and she has an ongoing collaboration with
the ORIGIN network of High Energy Physics, and with CERN, where she wrote her master’s thesis (2019), and where she co-organizes
artistic research trips since 2018. Daniela was a research assistant for the project DIGI-Sense at the Johannes Kepler University,
led by Claudia Schnugg from 2021 to 2023.
Her artistic research and practice, currently focused on Origin of Life Research and complexity sciences, starts with a small obsession with how life emerges from geological and chemical materials, and how it complexifies, becomes bodies, societies, and ecosystems. She studies and rethinks human-made taxonomies, categories, binaries, and disciplines, looking for a space to exist outside of them: of the neurotypical, of the division of humans and nature, of the geographical borders.
Daniela's lectures at the Art & Science Department on Expanded Nature Studies examine the historical divide between art and science through excursions to places such as the Haus des Meeres. Together with students, she asks how artistic practices can offer more relational, less hierarchical ways of studying and understanding the complexity of life.
