The Emperor’s New Clothes

Master thesis

2011, Installation — shown in Diploma Projects | Summer semester 2011.

Technique: Glass-installation

Size: 100 x 100 x 100 cm

“The emperor’s new clothes” is an installation made of glass, which has its origins in the desire to combine two different worlds, the visible and the invisible. For the naked eye, the object remains transparent, like the clothes of the emperor in the fairy tale. Only when the observer puts on a symbolic fool’s hat, the object will come to life.

The implementation was done with polarised light; the object solely consists of glass and cellophane, which was pasted up with adhesive tape that became a transparent pigment. When the observer looks through a polarisation filter, the individual elements will become colourful while they remain transparent for everyone else.
