Pickle
Laura Chalabi
2026, glass, pickled vegetables, text, performancePickle explores how diaspora preserves and transforms culture over time. Migrant communities often maintain versions of culture and language that are shaped by memory, thus creating forms of continuity that are both archival and estranged.
The installation uses the metaphor of pickling to articulate this process. Vegetables, tightly arranged in glass vessels, function as material analogues for cultural preservation—intact yet altered. On the glass vessels, the work features fragments of a prose text that engages with themes of inheritance and linguistic belonging.
A live performance accompanies the installation, during which the artist pickles vegetables on site while reciting the prose.
