About - Tonica Hunter

Tonica Hunter (BA, MSc) is a researcher, curator and DJ originally from London and based in Vienna since 2014. Since moving to Austria she has built up a portfolio as a freelance independent curator for discourse, music/performance and visual arts. In her course 'ars sciendi (the art of knowing)' Tonica explores the queer art of failure and unknowing as well as foregrounding sensuous, marginalised, non-academic art/science knowledge. Tonica is teaching "ars sciendi (the art of knowing)" since winter semester 2023/24.

  • guest lecture "from its Latin root “curare” to take care" at Kunst uni Graz for the Master Course "Masterstudium Musik- und Theatervermittlung"  on 02.05 - part of the Lehrveranstaltung "Kunst- undTheaterdiskurse (Diskriminierungskritik)" invited by Dr Sieglinde Roth.
  • "endlich ein wokes thema" curation of two part side programme at Burgtheater - 16.05 "and there are many more stories to tell"  and 15.06 "European art music and the Black contemporary" - the side programme is for the first Black female directed- and BIPOC cast only play at the Burgtheater: Cypressenburg.

  • mumok reopening - curator of musical programme "nothing new under the sun" with artists such as Miriam Adefris, Tmnit Ghide, Jarrod Carranto as part of the new exhibition "Avant-Garde and Liberation. Contemporary Art and Decolonial Modernity" opening 06.06 (website link to come)
  • guest lecture and workshop for the course "Kuratieren in den szenischen Künsten" an der Universität Salzburg in Kooperation mit der Ruhr-Universität Bochum und der FU Berlin. 06.07. invited by BA. MA. Gwendolin Lehnerer.
