A visit to Ars Electronica 2026: Negotiating Humanity

As every year, before the semester starts, we take our students to the Ars Electronica Festival in Linz. It’s a chance for incoming and current students to meet each other and the international field of art & science.

This year, on Friday 11 September 2026, the group met at OK-Platz 1 in the morning to pick up tickets and start at the curated theme exhibition in the OK Quarter, the festival’s central hub, from which artworks spread out across the city. Along the way we saw works by alumni, and Martin himself introduced us to Common Fields, the participatory artwork he presented as part of the MIM collective together with Art & Science alumni Maximilian Gallo and Ivonne Gracia Murillo.

We also stopped by the Lentos Kunstmuseum Linz where the “Negotiating Humanity” exhibition brought together award-winning works from the Prix Ars Electronica and the S+T+ARTS Prize.

After lunch, we met the artists from the TU Delft art science residency, students from TU Delft Emergence, the SKKU School of Convergence in Seoul, and the Creative Intelligence and Technology MSc programme at Leiden to spend the afternoon together.

A guided tour through DH5 introduced black_box_detox, TU Delft’s exhibition. It looks at the systems that quietly run underneath everyday life: algorithms, neural networks, creative robots, biorhythms, bird calls, fibre optics, AI-assisted mineral prospecting — and uses art, code, data and experimentation to make them tangible.

From DH5, the group moved on to the SKKU student exhibition at the campus exhibition, where they showed us their works. After so much walking, we ended the day with a talk by Amir Bastan from Creative Robotics in Linz: No Country For Robots, joined by a visiting Bavarian innovation delegation.

The day ended on the Kunstuni rooftop, with pizza, drinks, and a view over the city. For those who wanted more, the night continued at the festival’s Nightline with their new found friends…
